Headache pain in Maylands, Perth

Headaches

Headaches are a common condition that can affect every aspect of daily life. Headaches can have a range of contributing factors including muscle tension, neck disorders, lifestyle factors and underlying medical conditions. Understanding the cause is key to choosing the right treatment.

New, severe, sudden or unusual headaches, headaches following trauma, or headaches associated with neurological symptoms should be assessed promptly by a medical practitioner.

At The Listening Hand, we provide osteopathic assessment and treatment  considering the impact symptoms may have on work, recreation and other activities that are important to the individual.

Understanding headaches

Headaches can be caused by a number of factors:

  • Tension headaches are the most common. They often feel like a tight band around the head and may be linked to poor posture, neck and shoulder tension, stress and fatigue and jaw clenching or teeth grinding.
  •  Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause throbbing or pulsating pain, sensitivity to light and sound or nausea and visual disturbances. Migraines may be triggered by hormonal changes, stress, certain foods, dehydration or lack of sleep.
  • Cervicogenic headaches are headaches that arise from the neck. Pain may begin at the base of the skull and may radiate towards the forehead or around the eye. Symptoms are often aggravated by certain neck movements or sustained postures. Prolonged desk work may be a common contributor.
  • Emotional stress can increase muscle tension and alter pain perception, making headaches more frequent or severe.
  • Inflammation or congestion of the sinuses  can cause facial pressure and headache, often alongside cold-like symptoms.
  • Fluctuations in hormones, particularly oestrogen, can trigger headaches — especially around menstrual cycles, pregnancy or menopause.

Headaches may also be linked to:

  • Dehydration

  • Irregular meals

  • Poor sleep

  • Excess screen time

  • Caffeine overuse or withdrawal
